The flag of Azerbaijan consists of three horizontal stripes – the top one is blue, the middle one is red, and the bottom one is green. In the middle of the red stripe, a white crescent and eight-pointed star are placed. Star, crescent, and green color are the traditional symbols of Islam. Eight peaks of the star denote eight Turkic groups inhabiting Azerbaijan and the crescent was borrowed from the Turkish flag. The symbolism of the colors is as follows: blue stripe represents the unity of Turkic groups, red is a symbol of progress and struggle for freedom, and the green stripe refers to the Muslim religion. The flag was officially adopted in 1918, but it was banned during the Soviet rule, and it has not been readopted until gaining the independence in 1991.
