The flag of the Czech Republic consists of two equally broad stripes, where the lower one is red and the upper one is white. Between the stripes in the left part of the flag, there is a blue wedge. The flag symbolizes national unity, which has been very important for the country whose identity has been tested so many times during the last century. In 1918, an independent Czechoslovak state was formed and in these times, we can find the origin of the current flag. After the WWII in 1948, the country´s government was overtaken by communists and in 1993 Czechoslovakia split into the independent Czech Republic and Slovakia. After the separation, the Czech Republic kept the flag and the interpretation of the flag has been changed slightly. Blue wedge, which originally represented Slovakia, stands for Moravia today.
